VANCOUVER ISLAND ASSOCIATION FOR INJURED MOTORCYCLISTS ... NEEDS YOU!

To all members of V.I.A.I.M.

For what seems like a lifetime, V.I.A.I.M. has asked, pleaded, begged and groveled for new blood to infuse the veins of this association.  We’ve put it in every newsletter via one director or another.  We expressed this need at the show and shines, in announcements at the Pig & Fin, face to face in one on one group discussions, all to no avail.  Not even to get sufficient volunteers for the beloved Pig & Fin.

Well its finally happened folks.  Not enough interest in worker bees throughout the year to be able to put the 2010 Pig & Fin on, let alone the min. 100 volunteers that would be needed the weekend of. And now V.I.A.I.M. has reached that critical crisis point.  On July 11th, we will be holding what may be the final AGM for V.I.A.I.M.  Folks we have gone full circle from the very first Pig & Fin to see if there was enough interest on Vancouver Island to support a chapter of The Association for Injured Motorcyclists, to barely hanging on.  We are at a serious crossroad.  Is there enough interest to keep us going?  We need some truly interested people that have some time and are willing to step up to the plate to do the business of V.I.A.I.M.

I’m talking about the everyday workings of V.I.A.I.M.  Finding the accident survivor, the Hospital visits, liaisons with your community, helping the downed rider and their family with everything from rides to doctor appointments, to babysitting or shopping, basically working it and getting the word out.  Oh and then there is the fundraisers which are really important but 4-6 people cannot continually do them all.

I’m not going to kid anyone, it is a year round job and countless hours that all seem to blend together but you know what.  When ten months or two years after we’ve helped someone you get a call or note that says thanks for everything and maybe a membership, that folks makes it worth it.

Unfortunately people burn out and when they take a nomination they don’t figure it’s going to be for a 5 or 10 year term, after all, the bylaws say a term is one year, but that is the reality.  The question to ask yourself isn’t “then why the heck would I do it”, but rather, “what’s taken me so long to get involved”…We need a new generation of interest, one willing to commit to at least 2 years and willing to groom their successors for the 3rd year.  Ok so what does all that mean?  Simply put, we need you to care enough about V.I.A.I.M. to attend this AGM and step up to the plate.  If the membership wants us to continue then we need a minimum of 10 committed people to take positions with the intent to do the jobs required.  All positions are up.  I do mean all, from President to Directors.  Do we need that many to create a board?  No, technically we only need six (6) but I’m here to tell you 6 is not enough!  Just think about our overall geographical area.  In reality 20 year round board members would allow things to run really smoothly, giving everyone a break now and again.

Ok, I’ve made my last appeal to all of you.  Now it’s up to you.  Reality…V.I.A.I.M. could simply dissolve due to lack of interest.

Meeting notice is attached.  I truly hope you care enough to show up to it and hopefully put a foot forward to participate on the board.

On behalf of V.I.A.I.M. board of Directors.

Sandy Catala,  Founding Board Member and current Director at Large
